Rain Returns By The Week’s End

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RIGHT NOW: Nothing but CAVU (clear and visibility unlimited) across our state this afternoon with temperatures mostly in the low to mid 60s. Cold again tonight with a clear sky, but not as cold as last night. We figure most places will wind up in the upper 30s, but the colder valleys near the Georgia border could approach the freezing mark again.

TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY: Our warming trend continues. Lots of sunshine both days with a high around 70 tomorrow, followed by low to mid 70s on Wednesday.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: The weather turns wet as an upper trough forms to the west. Some moisture from Hurricane Rick in the East Pacific will be entrained into this system, so it could be a pretty good soaking. The rain could move in as early as Thursday afternoon, with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms Thursday night, Friday, and Friday night. Rain amounts of one to two inches are likely; some spots could get more. I am afraid rain will yet again be an issue for high school football games across the state Friday night.

OUR WEEKEND: The 12Z GFS is now showing a very deep upper trough, with the axis just west of Alabama along with strong vorticity centers rounding the base of the trough. This, if correct, will mean a cloudy, brisk, and very cool Saturday with some chance of light rain in scattered spots. Really it looks like last Saturday, except it probably won’t be quite as cold. Temperatures will probably hold in the 50 to 54 degree range based on the low level thickness projections, and with a brisk north wind and lack of sunshine it will feel colder.

Sunday promises to be a sunny day with a high in the low to mid 60s. We will drop to near 40 degrees early Monday, so not as cold as the outbreak we have just seen.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Watch the Weather Xtreme video for more voodoo land details, but it looks like the first half of next week will be rain-free.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. This week’s guest is Bill Read, Director of the National Hurricane Center. The show should be posted by 11:00 tonight.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 14 at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years). We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

I had a great time today seeing the boys in grades 5 through 12 at Gaston School in Etowah County; be looking for them on the Pepsi KIDCAM today at 5:00 on ABC 33/40 News….
