Severe Threat Over for Much of the Area; A Few Strong Storms Possible Through the Afternoon

| March 7, 2022 @ 2:38 pm

At 2:20 pm, the line of rain and storms continues to push eastward across Central Alabama, but the good news is that we have not had any severe weather watches or warnings issued throughout its trek. The line stretches from Ranburne to Rockford to Autaugaville and is moving at roughly 30 mph. The best news is that north and west of the line, the threat of severe storms has ended.

Speaking of the severe weather threat… The Storm Prediction Center has virtually removed the Slight Risk from Central Alabama and continues a Marginal Risk for the east, southeast, and southern parts of the area, along and east of a line from Orrville (Dallas Co.) to Sylacauga (Talladega Co.) to a few miles north of Heflin (Cleburne Co.). As I mentioned earlier, the threat has ended north and west of the marginal risk.

The main threats for the remainder of the event will be from isolated damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and a small potential for quarter size hail. A brief spin-up tornado can’t be ruled out, but that will be highly unlikely at this point. The threat will continue from now through 7 pm this evening.

There is still a decent bit of instability out ahead of the line, but storms are really lacking the shear needed to get the helicity values higher and potentially getting these storms to spin. Significant Tornado Parameter values are 0.5 and less, so we are not really worried about a tornado, but it is a non-zero threat.

We’ll keep you posted if anything fires up and gets going.
