October, 2009, 4th Wettest

| October 31, 2009 @ 10:34 am | 2 Replies

I feel like one of those television commentators covering the election – October, 2009, will come in as the 4th wettest October on record! Only this is just climatological records.

Through October 30th, the Birmingham International Airport had recorded 7.50 inches of rain. Since midnight there has been 2 tenths of an inch of rain. There is likely to be a tad bit more rain in the gauge, but the total through 6 am stands at 7.70 inches.

That is enough to put October, 2009, into the record books as the 4th wettest October on record here. And since third place is over 10 inches, I’m confident that we will not get another three inches of rain today!

So back-to-back months go in the records – September as the 3rd wettest and October as the 4th wettest!

By the way, the annual total for 2009 stands at 59.85 inches through October 30th. That’s a surplus of just over 15 inches making 2009 the 27th wettest year on record so far. If November and December come in around their average values, our total annual rainfall would be nearly 69 inches which would make 2009 the 6th wettest year on record.
