Alabama NewsCenter — Auburn University expert discusses wildfire season, how landowners can better prepare
By Auburn University
As most of the United States enters the wildfire season, Auburn University wildland fire expert Heather Alexander, associate professor of forest and fire ecology, comments on what can be expected and how landowners and managers can help reduce occurrences and damage.
Q: What is the best way to prepare land to help prevent forest fires in the future?
Heather Alexander: First, it is important to understand that not all forest fires are bad. Unintentional and uncontrolled fires, or wildfires, are the fires that we usually try to prevent, and the best way to do this is by limiting both fuel accumulation and ignition sources.
