Clouds Still Here; Colder By Thanksgiving
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
TODAY/TOMORROW: Clouds are still covering most of Alabama this morning, and temperatures have not budged in the last 24 hours. Temperatures are in the 50 to 55 degree range at 5:00 for most places, and we should rise into the low 60s today with the clouds still hanging tough. A cold front will pass through tonight, but the moisture is so shallow we don’t expect any significant rain. Then, tomorrow, the sky becomes partly sunny as drier air slips into the state. The high tomorrow should be in the low 60s.
TRAVEL TOMORROW: The good news is that much of the nation will be dry with no serious weather issues. The most widespread rain will be over the Florida peninsula; places like Orlando, Jacksonville, and Miami will be wet at times. The Florida panhandle will be dry along with most of the Deep South with seasonal temperatures.
THANKSGIVING DAY/FRIDAY: A sharp upper trough will form over the eastern U.S. on Thursday, delivering chilly air to Alabama. We will struggle to reach the low 50s on Thanksgiving afternoon with a chilly wind and a mix of sun and clouds. Then, by Friday morning, we should be below freezing to start the day with temperatures between 28 and 32 degrees. Friday will be sunny but cool with a high in the low 50s.
IRON BOWL: Perfect day for the big game at Jordan-Hare Stadium Friday afternoon… clear and cool with a kickoff temperature near 51 degrees, then falling into the 40s during the second half as the sun goes down.
REST OF THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Fantastic weather for Saturday and Sunday; mostly sunny pleasant days and clear cold nights. Highs mostly in the 60s; we do note we should be at or just below freezing at daybreak Saturday.
NEXT RAIN/STORM EVENT: The weather turns wet Monday of next week with a vigorous storm system featuring a good jet structure and a deepening surface low. It remains to be seen if we can break into the warm sector and have a risk of severe weather; the GFS has suggested the air will be too stable for any serious issues, but the 00Z run did trend stronger with the entire system, and it will be watched closely in coming days. Remember, NWP (numerical weather prediction) will have a very tough time handling systems in this regime. We turn colder by the middle of next week, but modeling for now is not showing any Arctic air following this system.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. Scroll down for the notes on this week’s new episode which was recorded last night.
Headed out early this morning to the annual Rick and Bubba Turkey Toss at Academy Sports on Alabama Highway 150 in Hoover… I hope to see many of you there. I will take the StormChaser so I will probably turn on the live video stream so you can see some of the action. Then, I will be on the road north to Cullman County to speak at West Point High School later this morning. Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
