Beautiful Sunday Afternoon Update Plus the Latest on Julia, Our Next Rain Chances

| October 9, 2022 @ 12:39 pm

It is a gorgeous fall Sunday across North and Central Alabama. Temperatures are climbing toward 70F over the area ranging from 64F at Cullman, Scottsboro, and Fort Payne, to 66F at Birmingham, 70F at Tuscaloosa, and 73F at Montgomery.

Total sunshine over much of the state. Some high clouds are streaming across South Alabama in the subtropical jet stream. There are clouds over Georgia and South Carolina, associated with a kink in the mid-levels of the atmosphere that is lifting some moisture up from coastal sections.

Everyone got off to a chilly start this morning here. Lows across North and Central Alabama included:

34 at Cullman
35 at Gadsden, Huntsville
36 at Anniston, Haleyville
37 at Pell City, Muscle Shoals, Decatur
41 at Bessemer
42 at Birmingham
43 at Montgomery
44 at Tuscaloosa
47 at Calera
48 at Auburn

Hurricane Julia moved inland on the Nicaraguan coast around 2 a.m. The system is making a beeline across the Central American country and will emerge into the Pacific this evening. Significant redevelopment of the system over the eastern Pacific is not expected and the system is expected to dissipate in the next couple of days. The Atlantic Basin looks quiet over the next two weeks.

The subtropical high producing Alabama’s fabulous weather is expected to shift further east by Tuesday, allowing a southeasterly low-level flow to redevelop over Alabama. As a result, moisture levels will increase and showers will redevelop in the region of lift ahead of an approaching trough and frontal system on Wednesday. It looks like rain chances will be high Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The GFS is still consistently producing 1-2 inches of rain across North and Central Alabama, which we could really use. The European is a little drier but still produces high rain chances.
