The Midday Report — Skies Clearing in the Northwest, A Few Showers Over the Southeast

| December 17, 2022 @ 11:14 am

Just before 11 am, skies were clearing out across the northwestern and northern parts of Central Alabama, while the rest of the area sits underneath mostly cloudy skies. There is a line of light showers are falling over the southeastern parts of Central Alabama, and they are moving eastward.

Temperatures as of the 10 am roundup were in the lower 40s to the lower 50s across the area. The warm spot was Eufaula at 53º with cloudy skies. The cold spot was Haleyville at 40º and fair skies. The Birmingham Airport was at 43º with cloudy skies.

Clouds will continue to decrease from the northwest throughout the remainder of the day, but showers will remain possible over the southeast and southern parts of the area for a while. Afternoon highs in the upper 40s to the mid 50s. Clouds will continue to move out of the area in the south while clear skies can be expected for the northern half. Lows in the mid 20s to the lower 30s.

Sunday will be a much brighter day across Central Alabama as skies will be clear with plenty of sunshine. Unfortunately, temperatures will remain on the cool side with highs in the mid 40s to the lower 50s.

The Arctic Blast will move into the area on Thursday night that will bring the early morning lows crashing down into the lower 10s to the lower 20s across the area from northwest to southeast. While this will be brutally cold, it is still warmer than our all-time record low in Birmingham, as the Magic City dipped down to 1º on December 23rd, 1989. It is very possible that some of the colder locations will make it down into the single digits. We’ll have to wait and see how cold it gets. By the way, highs on Friday will only be in the lower 20s to the mid 30s.
