Forecast Update: 1 p.m.

It is a gorgeous day across most of Alabama. South of the Tennessee Valley, skies have been a bright, clear blue all day.

Some thick cloudiness has been flowing eastward across North Alabama in a moist, strong upper level flow on the southern periphery of a big upper level low spinning over the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. There is an area of light area over southern Tennessee associated with this feature.

Now some low and mid level clouds have been drifting into Central Alabama as well. Partly cloudy skies are now evident at Tuscaloosa.

Clouds will continue to thicken from the west during the afternoon hours, becoming completely cloudy in most areas by sunset. There could be a few light showers across the central part of the state from late afternoon through 2 a.m. or so.

Skies will actually clear some toward morning across North and Central Alabama. Overnight lows will be in the upper 30s North. Readings will be in the mid and upper 40s across Central Alabama. Monday promises to be a beautiful day, with partly cloudy skies and highs mostly in the lower 70s. A few 60s will be noted over the Tennessee Valley. Monday night lows will be in the 40s mostly again, with a few upper 30s in the normally colder spots.

Our next storm system will begin to make its presence felt by Tuesday afternoon. A few light showers may reach the Northwest Corner of the state by late afternoon. They should be limited to North Alabama during the overnight, but rain and storms will overspread the rest of the area Wednesday morning and afternoon, ending from the west late in the day. Storms could be strong southeast of I-59. Highs will be in the lower 70s.

Lots of uncertainty in the Friday forecast. The Euro has us wetter with lingering showers, so we will reintroduce a chance of showers for Friday.

We might get through the day on Saturday dry, but another round of showers and storms will move through Saturday night. Some of them could be strong, but it doesn’t look like a significant severe weather outbreak.

The first week of May looks like it will trend warmer, as one would expect in one of our best months of the year.
