New Day, Old Forecast
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes and YouTube…
Looks like we will be in a holding pattern for the next five to seven days. A generous supply of low level moisture will stay in place, and with a general weakness in the upper air flow to the west we will have scattered showers and thunderstorms on a daily basis for the rest of the week and the weekend. Unfortunately, the daily variation in the coverage and placement of showers and storms is determined by mesoscale features that are almost impossible to identify more than a day in advance, so we will use the ole broad brush in the forecast through Saturday and Sunday. More clouds than sun, scattered showers and storms, and daytime temperatures below normal with highs mostly in the mid to upper 80s. A few spots, where the sun breaks out for a good length of time, will bump 90.
LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any really nasty heat bubble setting up here for the rest of July; the hottest temperatures should remain out west underneath the upper ridge. I note that Boise, Idaho reached 100 degrees yesterday, while the high in Birmingham was 86.
TROPICS: Nothing organized, but there are scattered waves out across the Atlantic basin, and it sure seems like we are getting ready for a potential ramp up in tropical activity by the end of the month. No El Nino this year, we are in a neutral ENSO condition right now, and you can have an active hurricane season in this pattern (you don’t necessarily have to have a La Nina cycle). Of course, time will tell.
WEATHERBRAINS: An all new episode of WeatherBrains is posted on the web and iTunes… Kevin Selle will be posting the show notes here a little later this morning. Brian Peters joined us with his cicada friends atop Mt. Cheaha.
WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page.
