The Midday Report — Severe Threat Less Likely Today; Remains Likely Tonight

| June 18, 2023 @ 11:22 am

As we have hit this midday report time, the news is looking slightly better, at least for the daytime hours, as the threat of severe storms have been greatly reduced. However, nothing has changed for the severe threat that will occur later this evening through the overnight hours.

Radar at 11:05 am shows light rain falling over a good portion of Central Alabama west of I-65, with heavier rain and storms over the extreme southwestern parts of the area. We are watching a cell over eastern Clarke County in Mississippi that currently has a Tornado Warning on it, but it is moving southeast and will stay south of the Central Alabama counties. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is up for Clarke, Choctaw, and Washington counties in South Alabama ahead of that tornado-warned cell.

So for today through the afternoon hours, conditions will not be favorable over the northern 2/3rds of Central Alabama for severe storms, while there will be a small risk of strong to severe storms for locations along and south of a line from Demopolis to Selma to Montgomery to Auburn. Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats.

However, for tonight, there is an Enhanced Risk up for locations along and south of a line from Tuscaloosa to Clanton to Clayton (Barbour Co.), a Slight Risk north of that to a line from Athens to Anniston to LaFayette, and a Marginal Risk for nearly the rest of North and Central Alabama. Damaging winds up to 60-70 mph and large hail will be the main threats. There is a very small risk of a tornado or two over the Enhanced Risk locations, but the rest of the area is much less likely. Timing will be from roughly 9 pm tonight until 7 am Monday morning.

For now, the rest of the forecast remains unchanged. Stay weather aware.
