Late Afternoon Alabama–4:45 Report

| January 7, 2010 @ 4:42 pm | 29 Replies

What a day! Thanks to Bill Murray for pitching in and doing my part of the blog updates this afternoon. I was getting behinder and behinder. Lots of radio updates and I was working on the afternoon weather fax and forecast.

Back to the present…

Most of the snow has spread east and SE of Birmingham. There was still a small area of snow over Extreme NE Alabama.

Now it is sort of a race against time about black ice problems tonight. Temperatures were a few degrees above freezing all afternoon so a lot of the snow melted. Also, we did not get as much accumulation as expected.

It will be turning sharply colder tonight probably before most of the melted snow can drain from highways. This will turn into black ice and since the ice willbe in patches it makes it even more dangerous.

Caution AND common sense is advised.

NOW IT IS BACK TO BITTER COLD
We believe the temperature will slide below freezing just a few hours from now and stay below frezzing all the way until Sunday afternoon! It will be bitter cold tomorrow into Sunday. Our coldest expected temperatures:

* Low 15 tonight
* High only 27 Friday and windy. Very low wind chill
* Low of 12 Saturday morning
* High 28 Saturday
* Low of 9 Sunday morning
* High of 34 Sunday afternoon (finally above freezing)

The wind chill will be below zero at times during this cold wave.

Big percentage of the USA having very serious winter problems. A number of northern cities have already used most of their snow removal budget. Some communities in Western New York was buried under 60 inches of snow in only the last week..
