Be sure and scroll down for pictures and video from the tornado in Huntsville yesterday. It will be interesting to see the story survey later this morning and the EF scale rating for that one. There was another tornado warning around 6:30 last night for parts of Clay, Randolph, and Cleburne Counties in East Alabama, but I have not heard of any damage over there. Those signatures were over very rural areas.

TODAY: No problems today; a partly sunny sky with a high around 60. But, we remain right under the storm track, so we will deal with yet another storm system over the weekend.

TOMORROW/SUNDAY: Still looks like the day tomorrow will be dry. Mild and breezy with a mix of sun and clouds and a high in the low to mid 60s. The main window for rain and storms will come from about 12:00 midnight tomorrow night through 12:00 noon Sunday. The good news is that the storms will be coming through at a time when the air will be rather stable, and SPC does not have any part of North or Central Alabama in a severe weather risk. Rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely; a reasonable chance we get away with no serious flooding problems.

We do note some surface based instability does show up Sunday afternoon, making us wonder if we will have another situation like yesterday where severe convection could fire up again in scattered spots. But, instability values are not as high as yesterday, and the upper forcing is much weaker, so we will discount that idea for now.

NEXT WEEK: We turn sharply colder Monday with a high only in the upper 40s. Tuesday could be even colder, and it looks like we will need to adjust highs back down into the 40s for Tuesday. And, sub-freezing lows are likely Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The GFS is trending colder toward the end of next week, and there is still some hint at some rain Thursday night and Friday. The model is evening hinting at some snow for parts of Tennessee with the colder look. Run to run consistency is not good, so forecast confidence for now is rather low in what happens out there at the end of next week.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: Looks like the AO gives a strong negative spike around the first of February, but more of a head fake as it trends back toward neutral territory in a few days. Perhaps we won’t have to deal with a severe cold wave, but no doubt there will be some decent cold periods through February. And, with the El Nino enhanced southern jet still cranking out the hits, the month looks like it will be pretty interesting.
