Bridges Icy over much of North and North Central Alabama

Precipitation has mostly ended in the Tuscaloosa – Birmingham – Anniston/Gadsden areas early this morning.

A mixture of rain, heavy rain and sleet continues across Central Alabama, south and east of a line from Heflin to Lineville, to Sylacauga to Clanton, Autaugaville, Fort Deposit and Greenville.

Precipitation is more scattered over Southeast Alabama and is mainly rain and sleet.

Over South Alabama, another area of mixed wintry precip is moving out of Southeast Mississippi into Southwest Alabama’s Mobile and Washington Counties. Temperatures are in the middle 30s in the Mobile area. Freezing temperatures are being reported as far south as Atmore. An area of intense rain with a doughnut hole looking feature was moving along the Mississippi coast, where temperatures are between 33-35.

Current Temperatures across North and Central Alabama:

Wind chill is now zero at Haleyville. A Wind Chill is in effect this morning for areas from Sumter, Greene, and Hale counties through Tuscaloosa, Lamar, and Pickens, then through Marion, Winston, Walker, Jefferson, Blount, St. Clair, Etowah, and Cherokee Counties. Wind chills will be in the single digits below and above zero this morning. The wind chill advisory will be in effect tonight for much of North Central Alabama.

Winter weather advisory continues for Central Alabama Counties south of the row of counties from Greene through Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, St. Clair, Calhoun, and Cleburne.

Travel is highly discouraged across North and Central Alabama where many bridges are iced over and dangerous.

ALDOT cameras show traffic is extremely sparse on interstate systems around the Birmingham Metro area. Road surface are at least partially covered in ice

Here are some road reports across North Central Alabama…

Etowah has reported many bridges in and around Gadsden are iced over now incluiing US 341 at 278 and 431 at 77. The AL-77 bridge in Southside crossing the Coosa is iced over. Emergency Managament in Etowah County reports many other roads covered with ice as well including the bridges on US-278 and AL-77 north of Attalla.

Vestavia PD is reporting many roads in the jurisdiction are all iced over including…

Brookdale Lane/Columbiana Road
Shades Crest Road
Brookwood Road at Glenn Terrance
Dolly Ridge Road
Altadena Road
Sicard Hollow Road
and Montgomery Highway
The bridge at Liberty Parkway and Overton Road is iced over.

DeKalb County Emergency Management has declared all roads in the county impassable as of 4:05 a.m.

Sleet is being reported across South Central and South Alabama in places like Autauga County, Elmore County, and at Troy in Pike County.
