Sunday Brunch Update: Cool, But Nice Today; Severe Weather Possible Next Friday and Saturday

| March 10, 2024 @ 12:17 pm

A gorgeous March Sunday is in progress across Alabama, with hardly a cloud in sight. Some high clouds to the west have been making a run at crossing the state, but they have yet to be very successful, and they are fleeting anyway.

Overnight lows were chilly across the area and included: 41F at Birmingham, 38F at Bessemer, 35F at Haleyville, 36F at Pell City, and 37F at Gadsden.

So, nothing is going to challenge our strengthening sun on this late winter day, and this will allow temperatures to rise into the upper 50s over the extreme northeastern third of Alabama, with 60s elsewhere. Sample temperatures will include 55F in Scottsboro, 58F in Birmingham, 59F in Alex City, and 62F in Montgomery.

Tonight will be even colder than last night. Readings will look like this:

With little cloud cover and light winds, this will set the stage for frost or freezing conditions tonight, especially in any protected valleys. Freeze warnings have been issued for the northeastern third or so of Alabama. Take the necessary steps to prevent damage to tender vegetation.

The rest of the week looks nice through Thursday with a gradual warming trend. Average highs this week will look like this across the area:

A large subtropical high to our east will protect us from rain until Thursday night, when a slow moving storm system will begin lumbering across the state, with increasing rain and storm chances for Friday.

Severe weather looks like it could be an issue on Friday, with decent instability, strong bulk shear, and moderate storm relative helicity. So it is a day we may have to watch out for. There could even be tornadoes involved. The cold front should push slowly through the state Friday afternoon and Friday night, but ahead of it, there will be some severe weather threat.

We will deal with additional severe weather Saturday afternoon adn night, starting to the west of Alabama and then working its way into our state during the evening. Again, tornadoes could be invoived, so pay attention to updates and forecasts throughout the week.
