Late Afternoon Update

Below is the snow accumulation projection from the Birmingham NWS office… might be a tad aggressive, but certainly possible:

Understand that is for their CWA only (county warning area)… heavy snow is likely over South-Central Alabama below that zone as well.

RIGHT NOW: Lots of snow in North Texas; scroll down for the images from a variety of folks out there. Snow extends into Southern Arkansas and Louisiana, and the big precipitation mass is moving steadily to the east. We have noticed very little northward movement in recent hours, giving some confidence level to our forecast.

TIMING: Looks like snow will begin over West Alabama late tonight, perhaps a little after midnight, then moving east during the pre-dawn hours. We believe the heaviest snow will fall over West Alabama from about 6:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., and over the eastern counties of the state from about 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. All of the snow should be out of Alabama by 6:00 p.m. (based on the latest model data).

We are now pretty much the model phase, and into the “look out the window” phase.

Remember, there will be surprises, and some will be delighted, and others disappointed in the amount of snow they see tomorrow. One way or another, it is always fascinating to watch if you love Alabama weather. Especially this kind of system.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS: See them on the ABC 33/40 site here.

LIVE STREAM AT 7:00: I will be on our live stream and the WeatherNow digital channel at 7:00 tonight for an extended discussion of the approaching winter storm; Jason and Ashley will be in Sumiton for Storm Alert 2010 at Bevill State.
