Wow, what a change for us and this weekend. It is going to seem downright spring-ish as highs climb into the 60s with a good supply of sunshine. But don’t get too comfortable with the warm weather because winter is expected to come back by the middle of the upcoming week.

But for today and Sunday, look for sunshine and warmth. I expect to see highs climbing into the 60s – middle 60s for some. That will surely feel nice after all of the cold weather we’ve had. The reason for this warmth can be found by looking at the upper atmosphere. We find the Southeast under a zonal flow as the northern and southern streams hold off on any significant disturbances for a few days. But changes begin to come about late into the weekend.

By Sunday, a fast moving short wave will zip across the lower Mississippi River Valley and bring rain to Alabama late Sunday and for the first part of Monday. I think the most likely time for rain will come from midnight Sunday night to about noon on Monday. Because the short wave zips along the rain should push through fairly quickly, but it will mean a wet commute on Monday morning.

Tuesday begins the set up for another round of colder weather. A short wave moving across northern Mexico will phase up with a vigorous short wave coming out of southern Canada to set up a closed low over the eastern half of the country. This is the kind of cold look we’ve seen all winter long since late last year. As the closed low dives into the East Coast area, it will usher in more cold air for us with the 540 line plunging to the Gulf Coast AGAIN! This will set the stage for the possibility of some snow showers on Wednesday and early Thursday. However, this is not presently shaping up to any kind of major snow event.

As the closed low sets up over the East Coast we’ll see short waves rotating around it helping to keep us cold and dry into next weekend.

And voodoo country continues to paint some potential issues with yet another possible winter weather event for the Southeast around March 2nd. But it’s way out there so we’ll watch to see how this all evolves on future model runs. The one thing I thing we can count on is a continuation of an active weather pattern.
