It is causing misery over a wide area. The crippling storm will hang in there unto the weekend. The intense low was in the general vicinity of the New England Coast this evening. It will loop inland and curve back toward the SE. This is quite unusual. Heavy rain was falling on the New England Coast but heavy snow inland. Here are some notes:

* On Mount Washington, New Hampshire at 7 pm the visibility was zero in fog and sleet. The wind was from the east averaging 100 mph, with gusts to 114 mph. Within the last hour, there was a gust to 121 mph!

NEW YORK CITY
Winter Storm Warning until 6 pm Friday. Heavy snow with 9 to 13 additional inches. (that may be a little conservative) High winds will assure some deep drifts. A person was killed in Central Park this afternoon when a large tree limb, heavily laden with snow fell on him.

PHILADELPHIA
Winter Storm Warning until 1 pm Friday. 8 to 12 inches of snow expected with much deeper drifts. Winds gusting to 45 mph tonight.

BOSTON
Experiencing a driving rain with east winds to 46 mph. Out on Nantucket, it was 48 with heavy rain. NE gusts to 38. The barometer was a very low 28.92 inches. Near or offshore, Mt. Pleasant Rock reported 39 degrees, wind east at 51 mph with gusts to 60.

PORTLAND WEATHER BUOY
24 foot waves, winds gusting to 57 mph.

This is indeed a big storm and this is not an all inclusive report! A huge number of flights canceled. Highway traffic will become impossible in a number of places.
