Tropical Storm Isaac Forms Over the Subtropical Atlantic Ocean
Tropical Storm Isaac has officially formed in the open central subtropical Atlantic, as announced by the NWS National Hurricane Center in Miami. As of the latest advisory issued at 11 PM AST on September 25, 2024, Isaac is located at approximately 37.1°N and 54.1°W, about 1,480 miles west of the Azores and 690 miles northeast of Bermuda. The storm boasts maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 km/h) and is currently moving east at 12 mph (19 km/h). The minimum central pressure recorded is 997 mb (29.44 inches).
Fortunately, there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect at this time. The storm is expected to maintain its eastward movement over the coming days, with some strengthening likely, potentially bringing it close to hurricane intensity by week’s end. Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 220 miles from the storm’s center.
Swells generated by Isaac are already impacting the coast of Bermuda and could reach the Azores by this weekend. These conditions may lead to life-threatening surf and rip currents, prompting residents and visitors in affected areas to stay informed through local weather advisories.
