SNOW DAY: Be sure and scroll for the the snow images from across Alabama this morning. As expected, the heaviest snow was over East Alabama, especially on the ridges where a number of 2-3 inch amounts were reported across Blount, Etowah, Cherokee, and DeKalb Counties. How about that 6 inch bullseye at Mentone.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: The precipitation is winding down across our state, and should be totally gone by sundown. We will dip below freezing late tonight, but much of the moisture will have evaporated, and we don’t expect any widespread black ice issues. However, the weather will stay breezy and cold for March, with lingering clouds and a high tomorrow only in the mid 40s. That is almost 20 degrees below average for March 3.

WARMER DAYS: The awaited warming trend begins Thursday with a high in the low 50s and sunshine back in full force. Friday and the weekend will be delightful, with lots of sunshine and milder afternoons. Look for a high in the mid to upper 50s Friday, mid 60s Saturday, and upper 60s Sunday. Somebody around here could very touch 70 before the weekend is over. It will finally feel like spring.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: A strong short wave could set up the first severe weather threat of the season over parts of East Texas, East Oklahoma, Arkansas, and North Louisiana Monday afternoon. Strong storms should move into Alabama late Monday night, lasting into Tuesday morning. The 12Z GFS shows the dynamics weakening, and with limited instability hopefully that will prevent a major severe weather problem here, but we have a long time to go before we get there, and nailing down details at this phase of the game is almost impossible to do.

Unfortunately, cold weather will likely return in the March 10-17 time frame with temperatures well below average as the AO flips negative again and the upper trough rebuilds over the eastern part of North America. Seems like this is the winter that will never end.
