Untrue to the title of this post, the weekend is not on a diet. But it is shaping up to be a wonderfully spring-like weekend for Central Alabama and the residents here who have endured their share of winter threats so far this year. And we surely deserve a great one with all of the wintery weather we’ve seen this year. Also I note that the official start to Spring is only two weeks away – March 20th!

A ridge aloft and high pressure at the surface will keep the weather beautiful with a clear sky and warming temperatures through the weekend. Look for a high around 60 today and 65 tomorrow. That 65, by the way, puts us back around the kind of temperatures we expect to see for early March. But the lows this morning – mainly in the 20s – are still about 15 degrees below where we expect to be.

Monday should be a good day, too, but as the ridge begins to breakdown and the next system approaches, we’ve likely to see clouds in the latter part of the day begin to invade our sky. Temperatures, though, will remain at or just above what we usually see in early March with highs generally in the middle and upper 60s. Some spots to the south of Birmingham could converge on the 70-degree mark.

Tuesday is expected to be a cloudy day with good chances for rain. As the upper trough becomes established over the Central US, the rain is likely to linger into Wednesday. The GFS is hinting at the potential for some heavy rain with a possible MCS, so we’ll be watching that feature in future model runs. The rain should move east of us on Thursday as another shot of cold air sets the stage for a cold weekend. In fact, the GFS also hints at some wrap around moisture bringing clouds and snow flurries to Tennessee and North Alabama on Saturday. Since this is verging on voodoo country, not going to throw that in the forecast just yet, but the cool down seems likely.

The long range model projections continue to show a very progressive pattern with weather systems every few days. I think we can bank on that happening and it certainly suggests a roller coaster for temperatures with warmups and cool downs for the foreseeable future.

What a week the last five days have been. And my schedule continues to show no signs of slowing down. Hoping to learn a lot this weekend with some computer training. But I’m going to jump outside whenever the breaks come to soak up some of this gorgeous weekend. Enjoy the weather and Godspeed.
