Sunday Weather Briefing Video: Mild Through New Years Eve, Then Much Colder Weather Ahead

| December 29, 2024 @ 4:32 am

IMPROVING CONDITIONS
The severe weather threat is now confined to areas east of Alabama. Clouds will gradually diminish through the afternoon from west to east, allowing for some brief sunshine before more clouds return tonight into Monday morning as an upper-level low swings through. Highs today will climb to the lower 60s, with drier and cooler conditions taking hold overnight.

MONDAY: A CLEARING TREND
Monday will bring a return to sunny skies after early morning clouds clear out, particularly in northern Alabama. Expect mild temperatures, with highs in the mid-60s across much of the region. Lows Monday night will dip into the mid-to-upper 40s. Despite the clearing skies, a quick-moving system will brush across the northern part of the state by Monday night, bringing slight rain chances to northeastern counties.

NEW YEAR’S OUTLOOK: COOLER BUT QUIET
Tuesday will feature a brief chance of showers in the morning across northeast Alabama, followed by cooler and drier air filtering into the region. Highs will range from the upper 50s to lower 60s, with lows Tuesday night dropping into the mid-30s. By midweek, high pressure builds into the area, providing a stretch of quiet weather through the New Year’s holiday. Highs will hover in the mid-to-upper 40s by Wednesday, with overnight lows falling into the upper 20s to lower 30s.

BEACH FORECAST: HIGH SURF AND RIP CURRENTS
Beachgoers to the beautiful Alabama and Northwest Florida coast can expect improving weather conditions today, with mostly sunny skies returning by afternoon. However, surf conditions remain hazardous, with a **High Rip Current Risk** and **High Surf Advisory** in effect through Sunday afternoon. Surf heights will range from 3 to 5 feet, with water temperatures in the mid-60s. Winds will shift westward around 10 mph as the cold front clears. Highs along the coast will reach around 70 today, with lows tonight in the mid-50s. Looking ahead to Monday, conditions will improve further with sunny skies and moderate surf heights of 2 to 3 feet. Highs will remain in the upper 60s, making it a great day for outdoor activities along the coast.

LOOKING AHEAD
The latter half of the week will feature cooler, more seasonable weather as high pressure takes control. Expect highs in the mid-40s to low 50s and overnight lows in the 20s to lower 30s. The next potential weather system appears likely to arrive by next weekend, but details remain uncertain.

VOODOO TERRITORY
The models are hinting that some really cold air could be affecting Alabama in about 12 days or so. Could that be accompanied by some wintry mischief? We will just have to wait and see…

WEATHER HISTORY
The town of Frostproof, Florida was incorporated in 1886. Local real estate developers, intent on attracting citrus farmers to the area, lobbied to have the town named Frostproof. While popular opinion favored another name, the real estate agent who volunteered to deliver the towns official application to the U.S. Postal Service changed the application to read Frostproof. Frostproof was anything but, and a devastating freeze affected the area on this date in 1894, causing severe damage to agricultural interests across much of the state. Another bad freeze occurred the following February and was followed by another a couple of years later. The town petitioned to have its name changed, but it would be changed back in 1906 and is still called Frostproof today.
