An Update for Southwest Alabama…Extreme Cold warning Issued by NWS Mobile

| January 19, 2025 @ 2:19 pm

An extreme cold warning has been issued for southwest Alabama, northwest Florida, and southeast Mississippi as dangerously cold wind chills are expected across the region. The National Weather Service in Mobile has upgraded the previous cold weather advisory, warning of wind chills as low as 9 degrees tonight through Monday morning. An extreme cold watch has also been issued from Monday evening through Wednesday morning, with wind chills possibly dropping to 7 degrees in some areas.

The coldest conditions will be felt in interior southwest Alabama, particularly in Clarke, Washington, Monroe, Covington, and Escambia counties. Coastal areas, including Mobile and Baldwin counties, will not be spared, with wind chills in the teens expected. The prolonged freezing temperatures could lead to pipe bursts, and icy patches may develop on bridges and overpasses.

Residents are urged to prepare for the bitter cold by dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and limiting time outdoors. Checking on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors is advised, as extreme cold can be especially dangerous for vulnerable populations. Pets and livestock should be brought indoors or provided with adequate shelter and warmth. Homeowners should take steps to prevent pipes from freezing by insulating exposed plumbing and allowing faucets to drip overnight. Portable heaters should be used with caution, keeping them away from flammable materials and never leaving them unattended. Generators and grills should never be used indoors due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Southwest Alabama is no stranger to cold weather, but this level of extreme cold is unusual and poses significant hazards. Conditions will remain dangerously cold for several days, with little relief expected before midweek. Residents should take precautions now to stay safe and minimize the risks associated with this Arctic outbreak.
