RIGHT NOW: The sky has become mostly sunny over the western half of Alabama this afternoon in the wake of the early morning storms that dumped brief heavy rain and lots of hail on some communities. Clouds linger over East Alabama, however, and more clouds are moving into Northwest Alabama, wrapping around the deep upper low to the northwest of the state.

OUR WEEKEND: Clouds will most likely cover much of North Alabama tomorrow, and at least a part of the day Sunday. We will have to mention the chance of some light rain in spots tonight and tomorrow as moisture continues to rotate around the big ULL. Rain should be light and scattered, but due to the cold air aloft, a few showers might even produce some small hail over North Alabama tomorrow, even with no thunder and lightning. Both the NAM and the GFS are printing a high of 55 tomorrow for Birmingham, which sounds good here. It will probably feel cooler due to the lack of sunshine and some light rain at times.

Looks like we will need to lower highs back into the 50s Sunday with a mostly cloudy sky as the pesky upper low is slow to lift out. The day should be mostly dry, however.

SPRING BREAK: That happens to be next week for many of you. Of course, the Alabama/NW Florida coast is a favorite. It looks like dry weather along the coast and mostly sunshine, at least into the middle of next week. Highs from Sunday to the middle of the week will be in the mid 60s, but cool at night with lows in the chilly 40s. If you are going to Gatlinburg, the weather will not be that nice. It will be rather cold most of the week with lows near freezing and highs in the 40s. There could even be a few snow showers at times.

NEXT WEEK: A rather benign weather pattern is setting up for Alabama next week. The week should be mostly dry with only a small risk of a shower on Wednesday with a short wave passing through. Highs will be seasonal, mostly in the 60s.

LONG RANGE: Watch the Weather Xtreme Video and you will see the 12Z GFS shows a chance of showers and storms Friday night of next week, followed by a sharp change to colder weather around Saturday March 20. No doubt we will have a few cold snaps in the weeks ahead, but model run to run inconsistencies are keeping confidence in details rather low.
