Uniquely American Places

We are in Southwest Florida this week knocking out five Major league Baseball Spring Training venues that I have never visited. Yesterday we saw the Twins take on the Red Sox at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. The Red Sox also train there, and we will visit their Spring Training home, which is City of Palms Park in Fort Myers also.

After the game yesterday, we drove out to Captiva and had dinner at what would likely be one of Brian Peters’ favorite restaurants: The Green Flash. He is a fan of that rare phenomenon that occurs at the exact moment of sunset. When it does, a bright green flash can appear above the setting sun.

Occasionally, I find places that I think are unique American destinations. I think that Captiva must be one with its cozy size, beautiful beaches and unique shops and restaurants.

I had to make a list of the others that I think fall into that category. It should be 100 items long. I hope that you will debate my choices and add the ones that you think I am missing.

10. Captiva, or perhaps Anna Maria Island in Florida
9. Lake Tahoe
8. North Carolina Outer Banks
7. Telluride, Colorado
6. South Beach
5. Freedom Trail – Boston
4. Grand Canyon
3. New Orleans
2. National Mall – Washington
1. New York City
