Summer Breeze

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

How about this song for today?

“See the curtains hanging in the window
In the evening on a Friday night
A little light a-shining through the window
Lets me know every thing’s all right

Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine
Blowing through the jasmine in my mind”

Now that was a classic song for a hot summer day… Seals and Crofts from 1972. Great top 40 AM radio tune.

NEW DAY, OLD FORECAST: Yesterday was the hottest day in seven days in Birmingham. The high was 102; the last time it was that hot was on August 18, 2000. I really don’t see any reason for the weather to be any different today; lots of hazy sun; a high somewhere between 98 and 103, and the chance of a cooling afternoon shower very very tiny. Most of the showers that form today should be along and south of U.S. 80, or over the southern half of the state.

THE DAYS AHEAD: The core of the upper air high, which represents the heat bubble, very slowly shifts to the west in coming days, and we will slowly back the afternoon highs down over the weekend and into early next week. But, the weather will stay hot, with mid 90s likely for most of next week. And, unfortunately the chance of any significant rain looks very small for the next seven days. The 00Z GFS run is basically dry as a bone.

We do note the Canadian GEMS model continues to develop some kind of tropical storm/hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico next week… this, most likely, is bogus, but if by chance the model is correct the system won’t have much of a chance to impact Alabama.

And, our pal the GFS develops a nice tropical system east of the Bahamas around August 19; it then moves it to the North Carolina Outer Banks on August 22 as a significant hurricane. While this is pure voodoo, the model is very persistent in forecasting an uptick in tropical activity a little later in the month. Sure looks like we will have some tropical mischief on our hands in 10 to 20 days.

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page. You can read more about the Brooklyn tornado over there, and there are lots of other very interesting stories.

This morning I will be speaking at the annual Mississippi State summer workshop for their distance learning meteorology students (the event is in Birmingham, not Starkville!), but I will be back in the office early this afternoon and the next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 3:30! STAY COOL.
