STORM SURVEYS: Be sure and scroll down for lots of pictures and information concerning Saturday’s major severe weather outbreak in Alabama. Early storm surveys show that at least three EF3 tornadoes touched down in our state… one that impacted Walker/Jefferson/Blount counties (Parrish, Cordova, Corner, etc), one up north that hit Albertville and Geraldine, and another that rolled through Collinsville and and Mount Vernon in DeKalb County. While there were no deaths or injuries in the Parrish/Cordova/Corner tornado, it does look like there were about 40 to 50 injuries in the other two. We will be posting more pictures and survey information as they come in today. Thanks to Ashley Brand, Bill Murray, and J.B. Elliott for their long hours of service with this major tornado event.

TODAY/TOMORROW: Cooler air moves into Alabama during the next 48 hours. The high today will be around 70, and we might not get out of the 60s tomorrow. Today will feature a mix of sun and clouds, followed by cloudy periods tonight and tomorrow with some risk of isolated showers. Rain amounts will be light and spotty.

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: These two days will feature a sunny sky with a warming trend. The high Wednesday will be in the low 70s, followed by upper 70s Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Unfortunately the weather turns wet and stormy again as the weekend arrives. A disturbed southwest flow aloft sets up across Alabama, and showers and storms are likely Friday, with the possibility of strong storms as the air becomes unstable. A surface front becomes parallel to the upper air flow northwest of the state, which means we will be dealing with occasional showers and storms Saturday and Sunday. While some severe weather is certainly possibly, flooding could be the most significant threat with this system. We will fine tune the forecast as the event gets closer.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The GFS keeps us wet and stormy at times Monday and Tuesday before cooler and drier air arrives at mid-week on Wednesday. Check out the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the GFS also wants to build a strong ridge over Alabama by mid-May, bringing the warmest weather so far this year to the state, and pushing the storm track well to the north.
