Here is a chance for anyone who was in a county that was included in a severe weather warning Saturday to make a difference in the warning process.
Please consider taking this short, free, anonymous, online survey. It must be done on Tuesday.
Here is the note from Pete Wolf who works at the NWS Jacksonville, FL…
All….
Our large-scale study of short-fuse convective warning utilization by the public has been launched! We are reaching out to local media, emergency management, schools, etc. to acquire participants for the study. The more participants we can acquire, the more we can gain from the results we achieve. Any efforts to get participants to our free, simple, anonymous survey after severe weather events is greatly appreciated. A survey should be completed by a participant when a warning was issued for participant’s county within the prior 72hr period.
We are also launching a parallel study for clients of WeatherCall, a service that phones clients to alert them when they are within a weather warning polygon. This parallel study focuses more on warning interpretation and response. WeatherCall is a collaborating partner in the parallel study.
Here are the particulars of the primary study:
Purpose: Study public reception and interpretation of, and response to, severe weather warnings issued by the NWS, and evaluate the impact of warning type, storm/threat type, event size, area of country, time of day, level of weather knowledge/experience, etc on the results. This effort differs from prior studies in that we will be incorporating all convective warnings, not just tornado warnings or warnings for major events. We will also evaluate a new warning utilization “measure” (warning success rate). This will be accomplished by means of a free, simple, anonymous survey…for local warnings issued within the prior 72hr period.
Data collection period: Now through the end of August (likely incorporating at least 15,000 warnings normally issued during this period each year).
Study focus area: The central and eastern United States generally east of the Rockies, but including Colorado and New Mexico.
Desired participants: The general public.
