Looks like another hot day for Central Alabama after the Birmingham Airport hit 89 for the high yesterday. We will most likely break into the lower 90s today. In fact, the 5 am temperatures across the country show 70 values extending all the way to near the western Great Lakes area, so even the Central Plains area is quite warm. But the central and northern Rockies have some below freezing values.

In the upper atmosphere, the ridge will hold strong for us for much of the upcoming week, however, we will need to keep our eye on the upper low along with the surface low in the Southwest Atlantic. The upper low that got cut off from the main westerlies will actually strengthen over the next day or so enhancing the development of a weak low currently in the eastern Bahamas. The surface low will move toward the north and possibly get close enough to the Southeast US coast to bring some rain and a bit of wind to the coastline. But the upper low should weaken and open up to the northeast Wednesday and Thursday taking the surface low toward the northeast away from the coast as it weakens. While this system does not appear to have tropical characteristics now, any strengthening could result in the system getting a name. We’ll just have to watch and see how it evolves.

The upper low to our east should bring some moisture/clouds to the area Tuesday and Wednesday helping to knock some of the heat down a tad and bringing scattered showers to the area. As that system over the Southwest Atlantic moves away toward the end of the week, we should see rain chances diminish and temperatures climb back toward the 90-degree mark.

Looking well ahead, the GFS is still maintaining a somewhat flatter pattern with the main westerlies along the US-Canadian border around June 3. The GFS also is continuing to show a rather deep trough over the eastern half of the country around June 5 and 6. So the trend is very similar to the run yesterday and would be welcome with good rain chances and somewhat cooler temperatures. But that is still a long way out.
