TODAY: Both the GFS and the NAM are printing a high of 92 degrees today, which is 9 degrees above the average high of 83, and 3 degree shy of the record high of 96, set in 1996. The upper ridge will provide unseasonably warm weather for the entire eastern half of the nation, while a trough out west is bringing chilly weather and some snow. Parts of Montana and Wyoming are under a winter storm warning this morning.

The weather will remain generally dry, although we can’t rule out a few isolated showers or storms late today and early tonight; we had one or two of those yesterday that popped up on radar. The chance of any one spot getting wet later today is only about one in ten.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow an upper low to the west will provide deeper moisture levels, meaning heat levels coming down, and a better chance of scattered showers and storms by afternoon. The high tomorrow will be back in the mid 80s, very close to average levels for late May in Alabama.

Drier air creeps in here Wednesday and Thursday, and the chance of a shower or storm looks fairly small on these two days, although we can’t rule out one or two of them in isolated spots. Pretty much the same story on Friday, although a northerly flow aloft will open the door for any big storm masses north of Alabama to work their way in here. We will just broad brush the forecast for now and mention isolated showers or storms Wednesday through Friday and make adjustments as needed.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Looks pretty good… a large upper low over the eastern part of Canada will send some cooler air down this way, meaning highs mostly in the mid 80s Saturday through Monday. And, the air will be pretty dry, and at this time it looks like a large part of the holiday weekend will be dry. We might even see early morning temperatures getting down into the mid to upper 50s by Sunday and Monday.

TROPICS: A little pre-season mischief in the Atlantic… some chance a tropical or sub-tropical storm will form east or north of the Bahamas… it won’t impact Alabama if it happens. See the Weather Xtreme video for more.

I have a weather program this morning at Vestavia West Elementary… the last one of the 2009-2010 school year. Hard to believe it is over; I have always said when it comes to teaching children, working in children’s ministry, or just being a parent, the days are long, but the years are short. Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 this afternoon… enjoy the day!
