Cool, Dry Weather Continues

Okay, I know it is a shameless plug, but the Helena United Methodist Church production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is a really good show to set the stage for the Christmas season. And the kids starring in the play do a fabulous job of bringing the Christmas story alive in an interesting way, so why not take in the last performance today at 3:00 pm. Hope to see you there.
Weather has been very nice. Really seems cold because the last week of November was sooo warm. Really, though, the morning lows today are very much in line with values typical of this time of year. Readings around the state were in the 30s this morning. Some clouds across the Tennessee Valley have helped to moderate lows a bit this morning and helped to keep highs down a hair yesterday. Muscle Shoals and Huntsville only got to 48 while full sun allowed Troy and Dothan to reach 65. All in all a great day. And I enjoyed driving the Storm Chaser in the Helena Christmas Parade for the third year – and the parade route was lined with lots of great folks.
Looks like our weather is going to stay dry through midweek, but cold. Got a reinforcing shot of cold air that should drop temperatures into the 20s for lows. Cooler air plus good raditional cooling conditions should combine to give us about three pretty chilly mornings through Wednesday. Afternoon highs should be in the 50s for the most part with our coolest afternoon coming on Monday.
The big “IF” in the forecast will come at midweek – about Thursday – when a fairly strong trough develops over the eastern half of the country. This could develop a weak low in the Gulf, but right now it looks like Central Alabama will remain dry. Should the low develop a bit stronger than the model indicates right now, we could see clouds and a little light rain, but it will have a lot of dry atmosphere to overcome.
That upper level trough should usher in another shot of cooler air, though. Lows won’t be especially cold – lower 30s or so – but the highs should drop back to the lower and mid 50s.
Trolling well out into the future it appears that our next good chance for rain won’t come until nearly mid-December – around the 14th. A fairly strong low latitude trough is forecast to move toward the Southeast from the Southwest US and it would appear that the Gulf will open up allowing a good rain event to develop. That’s still pretty far into the future, so timing might be adjusted as we get closer to it, but it’s a trend we can watch develop with later model runs.
I sure hope you have a great Sunday and get a good start on the upcoming week. God bless.
