| August 21, 2007 @ 4:18 am | Reply

Powerful Hurricane Dean is now inland over the Yucatan Peninsula.

A Hurricane Hunter Plane indicated he made landfall on the East Coast of the Yucatan Peninsula near Costa Maya or Majahual about 3:30 am, CDT. This is about 40 miles ENE of Chetumal.

LOCATION/MOVEMENT
At 4 am, just inland near latitude 18.7N, longitude 87.8W or 35 miles ENE of Chetumal, Mexico. Dean was moving toward the WNW about 20 mph. That should continue today. He will continue across the Yucatan today and reach the Extreme South Bay of Campeche tonight.

WINDS/PRESSURE
Sustained winds 165 mph with higher gusts. This makes Dean a very powerful Category 5. He will weaken over land today but even so, he should maintain hurricane force. Pressure neat the center is 906 MB or a very low 26.75 inches. That was just before landfall.

HIS FUTURE
He will move across the very lowest part of the Bay of Campeche making his second landfall on the Mexican Coast Wednesday aftenoon.

RAIN AMOUNTS/FLOODING
Very heavy, 5 to 10 inches with maximum amounts up to 20 inches. Life-threatening flash flooding and mud slides possible.

USA IMPACT
Little or none. His track will remain far south of the USA border.

We will try to gather some spot reports a little later and add to this report.
