Not as Hot – Some Spots Wet

The latest edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

What a day we had yesterday with showers developing fairly early and capping the afternoon heat. I still recorded a high of 99 since the showers developed away from my location. But if the showers developed near you, then temperatures got capped around the mid-90s or so. Nice change. Plus the showers were scattered about and some spots got some nice rain. But as is so often the case, some spots didn’t get a drop. The Storm Total Precipitation image from the WSR-88D gives a good perspective on that.

Looks like the dew points are still high running in the lower 70s, so the air mass over Central Alabama remains moist. Because of that, it would be impossible to remove any mention of showers. And with all the leftover boundaries from yesterday, we should see showers develop again during the first half of the afternoon. Showers a bit sparse on radar this morning as you would expect.

So what’s in store for the upcoming week? Looks like the heat ridge is gone but the ridge is not completely gone. I think 90s will be the rule for this coming 7 or 8 days. But without an air mass change, we’re still going to be dealing with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms. It just won’t be as hot, but the humidity will stay high.

The upper pattern goes through a gradual shift by the end of the week with the GFS continuing to develop a trough on the East Coast. The development of the trough with a fairly good amplitude around next Saturday could result in a cold front dragging into the area. It won’t be particularly strong but might enhance rain chances a tad.

The big news continues to be the strong front still showing up around the 9th of September – but well into voodoo land. This could be our first real front that reminds us that Fall is just around the corner. I know that I’m pulling for it.

Tropics remain quiet. Seems kind of eerie since we are in the heart of the hurricane season, but quiet none the less.

Here’s hoping that you get some rain in your gauge today. I should have another Weather Xtreme Video posted by 8 or so tomorrow morning. I hope that you have a good weekend. God bless.
