Heat Break Ahead?

With the help of a few more clouds and the presence of a weak frontal boundary, Central Alabama could be in store for a slight break in our record heat of the last several days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. But don’t get too excited about this because I’m only talking about a 3 to 5 degree drop in temperatures, just enough to get us away from record values but certainly not enough for winter coats!!
A cold front will sag into the area on Friday and Saturday thanks to a strong trough moving across the eastern part of the country. Troughs don’t typically have much influence on our weather at this time of year, but this one is strong enough to get the frontal boundary into the area. The front will more or less wash out as it does but for a couple of days, primarily Friday and Saturday, it appears the front will have enough of an influence to improve our rain chance and the overall shower coverage.
Cautionary note here – showers are still showers and this forecast does not mean that everyone will get rain. Coverage should be somewhat higher than the isolated showers we’ve been seeing over the last several days, however, some spots could still get missed. With improved areal coverage, some folks will see 1 to 2 inches of rain in the stronger storms which are also likely to be slow moving. Because of this weak boundary and the high humidity and heat combination, SPC has outlooked Central and South Alabama for a slight risk of severe storms on Day 2. The primary threat will be damaging wind from potentially strong microbursts.
Tropics are still relatively quiet. Two areas remain under the watchful eye of Hurricane Center forecasters, one the remnant of Colin just north of Puerto Rico and the other in the western Caribbean, neither of which shows any strong signs of tropical storm development.
