Just like one of Arnold Schwarzeneger’s famous lines, “I’ll be back,” the heat will be back after a short respite. I was thinking as I was going through the charts this morning that I should call the upper ridge “the Energizer ridge” after the famous bunny since the ridge this summer has kept going and going and going and going!!
After a somewhat stormy day across Central Alabama that saw a number of showers and thunderstorms, it appears that with the ridge building back into the Southeast and the continued sagging southward of the front along with it washing out, the heat returns the first of the week along with mostly sunny skies and little chance for showers or thunderstorms. Greatest chances for thunderstorms today and Sunday appear to be over South Alabama.
While I can’t completely rule out isolated showers in Central Alabama through mid-week, I do expect them to be few and far between. Some good news, though, the ridge begins to migrate westward as a substantial trough develops over the eastern half of the country toward the latter part of the upcoming week. The brings hope for additional heat relief and the possibility of increased shower chances.
Tropics are not very active. Colin continues to struggle. An area of convection in the South Central Atlantic shows some potential for development. An area of disturbed weather in the western Caribbean does not appear likely to do much.
Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk for severe storms in the North Central US and the Southwest US. The area in the North Central US shifts eastward on Day 2 as the westerlies remain well to our north.
I noted yesterday that some spots could get torrential downpours with 1 to 2 inches possible. My weather station recorded 2.26 inches of rain yesterday. A tenth of an inch came in one small shower in late morning, a shower without any thunder. Then the big one occurred between 3:15 and 4 pm and I recorded 2.16 inches in about 45 minutes. I understand similar rain occurred at the NWS office as the Shelby County Airport. I have to say, though, that I hated to see all that water running down the street since it did not have much time to soak into the ground.
The GFS long range forecast promises more of the ridge as we get into the middle portion of the month, so the heat will roll along for a bit longer.
