MUGGY WEEKEND: The old tropical low is still hanging around Alabama, and helped to produce some big morning downpours through the central part of the state. At mid-afternoon the most numerous showers and storms were over East Alabama, especially over Calhoun, Cleburne, Clay, and Tallapoosa counties. All of the storms in progress now are producing heavy rain and some are packing lots of lightning. The showers will die down later this evening, but a few late night showers can’t be ruled out.

Hot and humid weather will headline the weekend forecast, with highs in the low to mid 90s tomorrow and Sunday. We will have a mix of sun and clouds both days, with a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, most numerous during the afternoon and evening hours. Another words, pretty typical mid-August weather in Alabama. With tropical air in place, some neighborhoods will see heavy amounts of rain.

NEXT WEEK: Drier air will filter down into Tennessee, but a pretty good part of Alabama, most likely, we will remain in most air, so we will roll with a persistence forecast through the week with partly sunny, hot days and the daily risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs will stay mostly in the low to mid 90s. There is some chance the drier air could slip into extreme North Alabama, with Huntsville, Muscle Shoals, and Scottsboro being mostly dry for the first half of the week.

TROPICS: The wave in the far eastern Atlantic has a chance to develop in coming days, but more than likely this one will recurve into the open Atlantic, well east of the U.S. coastline. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

THE STREAK IS ALIVE: Birmingham did rise to 90 degrees at 3:00 this afternoon… for the 47th consecutive day. A number of other Alabama communities to the east will stay below 90; Anniston reported 84 and Gadsden 81 degrees at 2:00.
