DRY AIR TAKES OVER: We have a nice surge of dry air aloft moving down into North Alabama this morning, and drier air at the surface will follow. Dewpoints will drop into the 60s, meaning humidity values will be considerably lower during the daytime hours this week, with cooler nights. Early morning lows will drop into the upper 60s, with potential for low to mid 60s for some of the cooler spots across Northeast Alabama.

STILL HOT DURING THE DAY: Dry heat heats very effectively, so the days will stay hot with highs in the 90s. Looks like highs mostly in the 92 to 96 degree range through Wednesday. We do note that a secondary front has potential to arrive Thursday, and knock highs down to around 90 by Thursday, Friday, and the weekend. If that fresh surge of dry air does arrive, we could drop down into the low to mid 60s by daybreak Friday. Maybe even upper 50s for the cooler valleys across North Alabama.

BIRMINGHAM STREAK STILL GOING STRONG: While most Alabama cities ended their streak of consecutive 90 degree days 7 to 10 days ago, Birmingham is the one spot where the record is still alive and growing. Today will be the 50th straight day with a high of 90 or higher.

NO SHOWERS: We will not mention any risk of showers all the day through Friday, which is very unusual for August in Alabama. Dry air wins the battle for now. We are looking at mostly sunny days and clear nights.

WEEKEND PEEK: Enough moisture returns for a slight risk of a shower Saturday, but more dry air pushes in here Sunday and early next week. The GFS is printing highs in the low 90s this weekend, and we will roll with that in our forecast.

DANIELLE: The tropical storm in the central Atlantic should become a hurricane during the next 24 hours. Models continue to recurve Danielle well before reaching the East Coast of the U.S., although it might be close enough for some swells and rough surf along the New England coast this weekend. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet, although we do note a low latitude wave that has emerged off the coast of Africa.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
