NO RAIN FOR A WHILE: A very dry pattern is setting up for Alabama and the Deep South for the next seven days. Other than a tiny risk of isolated showers Friday evening, there is no significant risk of rain through early next week as the main storm track remains to the north, and tropical action remains well to the south and east. A pretty simple forecast, actually, with daily highs around 90, and lows mostly in the 60s, with potential for the cooler spots to reach the 50s from time to time.

THE RAIN SITUATION: Birmingham’s rain total for the year so far is 37.59″, with a deficit of 1.78″. However, we note the deficiency is a whopping 8.07″ at Tuscaloosa, and 5.92″ at Anniston. No doubt we need some rain, but it just isn’t going to happen for a while. Keep in mind October is our driest month of the year, it usually takes a tropical system to bring a big, widespread type rain event this time of the year. November and December tend to be very wet, and is considering our fall severe weather season.

TROPICS: We now have two hurricanes in the Atlantic basin, Igor and Julia. Igor weakened a bit, but still is packing estimated winds of 135 mph. It will recurve well east of the U.S., but could be very close to Bermuda this weekend. Julia won’t get close to the U.S., and is expected to weaken to a tropical storm as shearing from Igor’s outflow begins to impact the system late this week.

The wave over the Caribbean still has a great chance to become Tropical Storm Karl soon… this one will move across the Yucatan Peninsula, with the second landfall on the Mexican coast well south of Brownsville, Texas. No impact on the Central Gulf Coast.
