September Heat Wave
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
NO RELIEF THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Seems like this is the summer that just won’t go away. We are looking at highs in the 91 to 95 degree range each afternoon all the way through early next week, with mostly sunny days and fair nights. You might see a speck or two on radar on one or two afternoons, but the chance of any one spot getting wet remains very small, and we won’t mention any significant risk of showers in the forecast. Morning lows will remain mostly in the 60s. These temperatures will be about 8 to 10 degrees above average values for mid September in Alabama.
SAMFORD FOOTBALL: Samford hosts Newberry College this evening at Seibert Stadium. While an isolated shower or storm is possible, it is more likely that the Homewood area will be free of rain at kick off (7 PM). Temperatures will be in the mid-80s in the first quarter, and it will not drop much during the game. It would not hurt to have a poncho/rain slicker in your back pocket early on for tailgating and the early part of the game.
LATE SEPTEMBER GULF HURRICANE? Lots of buzz about the 12Z run of the GFS developing a major hurricane in the Gulf late this month with landfall near New Orleans (see the Weather Xtreme video for details). Remember, this is nothing more than voodoo, but the idea of a Gulf hurricane is very real and credible since the water is very warm and has been untouched this season. It will be very interesting to watch global model runs in the next 7 days or so for consistency.
THREE HURRICANES: Igor remains a powerful hurricane in the Atlantic, and could bring a disaster to the tiny island of Bermuda late in the weekend, as the NHC track has the storm moving right over the island. Even though the recurve will be far east of the U.S., the East Coast will still see rip tides and very rough surf. Behind Igor is Julia, a weakening hurricane that will basically stay in the middle of nowhere. And, Karl is now a hurricane in the Bay of Campeche… this one will strike the Mexican coast tomorrow evening as a category two hurricane well south of Brownsville, Texas.
IVAN ANNIVERSARY: Be sure and scroll down for some amazing video from Bill Castle; it was six years ago today that Ivan moved into the Alabama Gulf Coast. I will post some of our live coverage a little later this afternoon.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

I enjoyed speaking to the Metro Criminal Justice Executives Association (MCJEA) this afternoon; ABC 33/40 hosted their monthly meeting and we had a great crowd.
I have a very odd work situation tomorrow; I will be working the TV shift from 3:00 until 9:00 a.m…. so I won’t be able to produce a Weather Xtreme video… but I will post a quick discussion at some point tomorrow morning. Then, I will be headed to Starkville for the annual Southeast Severe Storm Symposium at Mississippi State. Brian Peters will have video updates Saturday and Sunday, and I will return to the regular schedule Monday. I don’t think I have been on TV at 4:30 in the morning at all in my career unless we had tornadoes flying around here!
