Thanks to a weak front and some reinforcement of the cool, dry air across Central Alabama, temperatures remain in check and quite Fall-ish with nippy mornings. In fact, I suspect some places like those normally cooler and still valley locations will be seeing some frost Sunday morning. If you have any tender plants that you want to keep safe from the frost, it would be a good idea to bring them in tonight.

Unfortunately, the weather is also going to be dry through Tuesday. I would not call our current dry spell a drought just yet – my definition of a drought involves something of a long term nature which this has not yet achieved. But I do acknowledge that the dry conditions are certainly with much of Central Alabama – much of the state in fact. The U. S. Drought Monitor showed that Alabama ranged from “abnormally dry” across Northwest Alabama to “extremely dry” in sections of East Central to Southwest Alabama.

Tuesday into early Wednesday promises the passage of another front which will produce some rain chances for us. However, moisture again appears limited. We saw this past week that the moisture can return in a hurry, so this one will bear a watchful eye from me. However, the fast flow and the lack of a good return flow should spell only scattered showers at best. The trough zips passed us late Wednesday clearing the way for more great Fall weather into next weekend.

Looks like temperatures should recover into the lower 80s Sunday and Monday but drop back into the 70s again for much of the rest of the week. Our coldest lows should come tomorrow morning with a gradual warm up in the lows through mid-week before they drop into the 40s again toward the end of the week.

Tropics remain somewhat quiet. There is the remnant of Paula – now wasn’t that quite an odd storm? – which is not expected to do anything. There is also a large area of cloudiness in the Southwest Caribbean which does not show any signs of development at this time. That cloudiness is drifting northward or northwestward and will be watched.

The long range outlook remains dry for the Southeast US. The flow stays fast but well to our north with the continued dominance of a ridge over the Gulf and the southern US. This means no sign of any kind of significant rain event for the foreseeable future.
