RAIN CHANCES AHEAD: Our weather won’t change much tomorrow as we kick off the weekend. Lots of sun with a warm afternoon and a high in the low 80s. But, on Sunday, with increasing moisture levels will bring in a chance of scattered showers by afternoon. The better chance of rain holds off until later Sunday night and Monday with the approach of a strong short wave.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Great weather for high school games tonight regardless of where you are in Alabama. In fact, I would label it as near perfect weather. It will be clear with temperatures close to 75 at kickoff and getting close to 60 by the end of the game. We don’t foresee much wind. In the world of college football for Saturday, LSU is going to be in Auburn for a very important game televised by CBS starting at 2:30. It should be close to 80 at kickoff and mostly sunny and in the 70s during the fourth quarter. Alabama will be playing Tennessee in Knoxville with a 6:00 p.m. start. Dry weather is expected, about 70 at kickoff and into the 50s in the fourth quarter. UAB will be Starkville for a game with Mississippi State starting at 6:00. Very dry weather there also with about 80 at kickoff and mid 60s at the end of the game.

NEXT WEEK: This could very well be our wettest week in a couple of months. Showers and a few strong storms are likely Monday (a major severe weather threat is not expected), with potential for around one inch of rain statewide. The lead wave moves on to the east by Monday night, but a moist airmass stays in place through mid-week with a stalled surface front just north of the state. We will continue to mention a chance of scattered showers and storms in a warm and humid environment Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, showers and storms should increase again on Thursday with the next wave. Rain amounts for the four day period Monday-Thursday should exceed two inches in a number of Alabama communities, which is something we really need. Then, drier air blows in on Friday.

HALLOWEEN WEEKEND: Out in voodoo land, the 12Z GFS paints a pleasant October 30-31 period with mild days and cool nights. However, there has been a little model inconsistency, and confidence in the forecast for October 31 is not especially high. But for now, the weather looks pretty good for trick or treaters and NASCAR fans coming in for race weekend at Talladega.

RICHARD: The tropical storm in the Caribbean continue to struggle… it is packing sustained winds of only around 40 mph. The system has been drifting slowly to the south for the past 24 hours; it is expected to move more to the west over the weekend, and make landfall on the coast of Belize Sunday night. Richard will be over land for a while, and if it survives it will enter the far Southwest Gulf of Mexico next week. Remains to be seen where it goes from there, but odds are it won’t be an issue for the Central Gulf Coast. It could drift west toward the main coast of Mexico, or be picked up by a trough to the north and impact South Florida. We will keep an eye on this.

Another wave in the far East Atlantic has some potential for development in coming days as it moves slowly to the west/northwest. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
