Cullman Update

| October 25, 2010 @ 9:24 am | Reply

ABC 33/40 Photographer Chris Reid is in Cullman, and we expect to have some video of the wind damage east of downtown on the News at 11 this morning. I spoke with Rob Cook with the Cullman Police Department and Tommy Self (a storm chaser with SevereStudios from Madison), and they gave me a rundown on the type of damage done:

*A car at Carlton’s Italian 3rd Avenue was moved about 2 feet by the wind, and heavy iron furniture was scattered.
*Several businesses at the corner of 3rd Ave NE and 3rd Street NE had windows blown out.
*Part of the roof at Hagan Realty was heavily damaged/partially blown off.
*A large tree was blown down at the Sacred Heart Church.
*The First Christian Church had window damage as well as a chimney toppled.

Tommy added that he found it strange that a storm moving northeast at 50 miles per hour could blow windows out and damage the eastern faces of buildings. I would agree with that assessment. Usually, you would find more damage on the western side in an event like this, but wind can do strange things. His stream is here live in Cullman.

We will be waiting for the National Weather Service in Huntsville to make an official statement on whether this was straight-line wind or a tornado.

If you have pictures you would like to send us from Cullman, Winston, Marshall, or DeKalb Counties, please e-mail them to pictures@abc3340.com.
