Central Alabama will get to enjoy one more warm late October day with plenty of sunshine and temperatures climbing into the mid 70s. So if you have plans for outdoor activities like hiking at Cheaha or heading to the race at Talladega, you will have some fine weather to go along with your activity. But there are some changes ahead.

A strong short wave will come out of the Rockies on Monday and dig toward East Texas, a bit further east and not quite as far south as the GFS projected on yesterdays run. This means much better chances for rain for us especially on Tuesday and Wednesday. Clouds will be on the increase Monday as moisture from the Gulf spreads northward across East Texas and Louisiana. As the upper trough drops in and closes off on Tuesday, we should see rain chances increase throughout the day on Tuesday. As the upper low advances slowly eastward, Wednesday will be a cloudy day with rain likely. At this time there does not appear to be much possibility for severe weather.

A surface low along the northern Gulf Coast will zip northeastward on Wednesday while a deep upper trough digs into the eastern half of the US. This means that the rain should end during the early part of Thursday with much colder air poised to enter the Southeast on Friday and Saturday. This means that jackets or even something heavier may be required for Friday evening outdoor events. By Saturday, we could be dealing with a freeze across Central Alabama and highs on Saturday only climbing into the upper 50s.

Looks like rainfall amounts could be in the one half to one inch range for a good portion of Central Alabama. The bulk of the rainfall will come on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The trough moves off the Atlantic coast on Sunday allowing the start of a warm up for us with another chilly morning.

Tropics have become a little quieter with Tomas the center of attention. Tomas produced 80 knots sustained wind at St. Lucia and is continuing to get slowly stronger. NHC continued to forecast gradual strengthening with Tomas forecast to become a major hurricane by late Wednesday or early Thursday, a bit slower than earlier forecasts. The track beyond 72 hours is still in question, but it still appears likely that the hurricane will turn northward ahead of the deep East Coast trough that will be bringing chilly weather to the Southeast.

Long range GFS model projections continue with a steady stream of weather systems bringing rain chances to us around the 11th and the 15th or so. With the lack of rain in September and October, we can use the rain. Alabama remains in a rainfall deficit with drought conditions ranging from abnormally dry to extreme.
