THIS AFTERNOON: The sky has become partly to mostly sunny across Alabama as drier air rolls in on a brisk northwest wind. Those winds will continue tomorrow, and will usher in the coldest air so far this fall season.

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: We will struggle to reach the low 50s tomorrow with a northwest wind of 15-25 mph. The sky will be partly sunny, and the GFS continues to suggest there will some wrap around moisture, sufficient for a few snow flurries over the eastern half of Tennessee, and the northeast corner of Alabama.

SNOW FLURRIES? There might be enough snow to make the ground white around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, and we wonder if our friends up around Mentone atop Lookout Mountain in DeKalb County will see a few flakes. The best chance of seeing flurries in Alabama will be across high terrain of Jackson, Marshall, DeKalb, and Cherokee Counties.

We will be below freezing both Saturday and Sunday morning. Looks like there will still be a little wind involved early Saturday, which should keep temperatures in a fairly tight range between 27 and 32. Sunday the wind will be near calm, and that will set up a huge spread, with the coldest valleys down around 24, and the ridge tops around 35.

The days over the weekend will feature maximum available sunshine with a high in the mid 50s Saturday, followed by low 60s on Sunday.

HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFFS: (This football weather forecast is courtesy of Jason Simpson. I see no reason to revise it.) The first round of high school playoffs this year will be awfully chilly! At kick-off, a lot of stadiums will already be down around 43 to 48 degrees with a north breeze around 10 to 15 miles per hour. By the fourth quarter, games in northern Alabama will be in the upper 30s, but even if you travel south of Birmingham, you will be looking at lower 40s with a breeze.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Down in Baton Rouge for the Alabama-LSU football game, expect sunshine and mid-60s at kickoff. Tiger Stadium will get a little chilly by the end of that one as the mercury drops into the middle 50s. Auburn’s high noon appointment with the Chattanooga Mocs will be a little less pleasant. Even in full sunshine, Jordan-Hare will sit in the lower 50s with a north breeze at 10 to 20 miles per hour. UAB’s homecoming kicks off at 3:00 PM Saturday in Birmingham, and just like Auburn, Legion Field will be a chilly place! Temperatures will fall from around 55º to the mid-40s by the end of the game. Samford also has homecoming on Saturday, and it will be chilly for that one, too! The 2:00 PM kickoff at Seibert Stadium will be just like Legion Field: temperatures falling from the lower 50s to the mid-40s with a north breeze around 10 to 20 miles per hour. Sunday brings a slight warm-up, but a true warming trend does not set in until early next week.

NEXT WEEK: We will be dry for the first half of next week with a warming trend; we should reach the low 70s by Wednesday afternoon. The next chance of rain will come around Friday November 12 or Saturday November 13. The GFS continues to suggest the main upper support for that system will lifting north, away from Alabama, so rain might not be too heavy. We will be much more specific on this early next week.

VOODOO COUNTRY: Still evidence of a decent rain event at mid-month, sometime in the November 15-18 time frame, but every GFS run looks a little different on the timing and details of the event. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Tomas will bring gusty winds and periods of heavy rain to Haiti tomorrow and tomorrow night, but the center of the system will stay a little west of the island, and the latest NHC forecast has Tomas remaining under hurricane strength until it reaches the Southeast Bahamas. See the video for details.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up November 13 at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. See you there!

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I had a great time today visiting with the students at the Allan Cott/Lakeview School today in Birmingham… look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
