CHILLY NORTH WIND: We begin this day with temperatures in the 37 to 42 degree range for most places with a generally clear sky. We still have a hard time reaching the low 50s today with a gusty northwest wind as a vigorous long wave upper trough strengthens over the eastern quarter of the U.S. Very cold air aloft associated with the upper trough will make the air unstable later today, and we expect to see a few showers or patches of light rain on radar, mainly north of Birmingham during the afternoon hours. And, thermal profiles suggest it just might be cold enough for a few snow flakes across higher terrain of Jackson, Marshall, DeKalb, and Cherokee Counties of Northeast Alabama. Nothing more than light flurries or a few snow grains, and the better chance will be up in East Tennessee.

FIRST FREEZE: We are still projecting the first widespread freeze of the season tomorrow morning. The wind most likely will keep blowing through the night, so lows should be in a fairly tight range between 29 and 32. But, Sunday morning should feature a calm wind, and that is when the colder valleys will head down into the mid 20s. The air is very dry, and we expect ample sunshine tomorrow and Sunday. The high tomorrow will be in the mid 50s, followed by a high close to 60 Sunday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The first round of high school playoffs tonight will be awfully chilly! At kick-off, a lot of stadiums will already be down around 43 to 48 degrees with a north breeze around 10 to 15 miles per hour. By the fourth quarter, games in northern Alabama will be in the upper 30s, but even if you travel south of Birmingham, you will be looking at lower 40s with a breeze.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Down in Baton Rouge for the Alabama-LSU football game, expect sunshine and mid-60s at kickoff (2:30 p.m.). Tiger Stadium will get a little chilly by the end of that one as the mercury drops into the middle 50s. Auburn’s high noon appointment with the Chattanooga Mocs will be a little less pleasant. Even in full sunshine, Jordan-Hare will sit in the lower 50s with a north breeze at 10 to 20 miles per hour. UAB’s homecoming kicks off at 3:00 PM tomorrow in Birmingham, and just like Auburn, Legion Field will be a chilly place. Temperatures will fall from around 55º to the mid-40s by the end of the game. Samford also has homecoming on Saturday, and it will be chilly for that one, too… the 2:00 PM kickoff at Seibert Stadium will be just like Legion Field: temperatures falling from the lower 50s to the mid-40s with a north breeze around 10 to 20 miles per hour. Sunday brings a slight warm-up, but a true warming trend does not set in until early next week.

NEXT WEEK: We warm up early next week, with a high in the upper 60s Monday, followed by low 70s Tuesday and Wednesday. The next chance of rain comes at the end of next week with showers possible on Friday (November 12), but the upper support will pass well to the north of Alabama, and for now it doesn’t look like a major rain event. Showers will end on Saturday 11/13. See the Weather Xtreme video for details on long range ideas.

TOMAS A HURRICANE AGAIN: Tomas is packing sustained winds of 80 mph, and is moving between the eastern tip of Cuba and Haiti this morning. No doubt Haiti will be on the wet side of the system, and potential remains high for significant flooding and some wind damage. Tomas will move over the Southeast Bahamas tonight before turning northeast and weakening. The system is no threat to the U.S. mainland.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up November 13 at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. See you there!
