Another Chilly Start

Another chilly start to the day today but we should see a relatively nice warm up with highs getting to around 60 degrees. One more chill-ish morning Monday with lows dropping back to near freezing – most locations 32 to 34 – as the surface high settles in over the Southeast US. The surface map this morning showed a very large – and I mean large – high pressure system from Southeast Canada all the way to Northeast Mexico. That pretty much covered the eastern half of the US. In the upper atmosphere, the trough that opened the gates to the cold air is moving slowly off the Atlantic coast as it is replaced by a ridge.

The ridge means dry weather through Thursday with temperatures warming up nicely. By mid-week we should be back to lows in the 40s and highs in the lower and mid 70s.

Looks like we will stay dry into early Friday. Thursday and Friday will see some changes begin to occur. A trough over the Rockies is forecast to have two pieces – one north and one south. The one to the south will come out as a strong trough with a closed low and zip quickly across the Lower Mississippi Valley to Ohio. The strength of this system suggests some potential for a severe weather threat but it also appears likely to come through very quickly. Right now it looks like the best chance for rain and perhaps thunderstorms will come late Friday and early Saturday morning. This could mean some weather to interrupt Friday night activities especially football championships.

If the GFS is correct on timing, though, it also means that the weather is out of here by noon on Saturday paving the way for another dry weekend with a slight cool down – nothing as cold as we have seen the last couple of days.

In the tropics, Tomas defied most predictions and actually intensified to hurricane strength once again. He’s moving out to sea and is no threat to any land areas and should be decreasing in strength over the next couple of days. Another disturbed area was located in the Central Atlantic with no signs of immediate development.

Looks interesting in voodoo country. The GFS suggests a southwesterly flow pattern which can be quite wet around the 18th. That will be followed by another deep trough over the eastern half of the country which might spell another round of cold weather as we approach Thanksgiving.
