Warmer Afternoons Ahead

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

ANOTHER FROSTY MORNING: Some 5:00 a.m. temperatures arounds Alabama this morning include 24 at Broomtown (in Cherokee County near the Georgia border), 28 at Gadsden and Valley Head, 30 at Haleyville, Concord and Coker, 31 at Anniston, and 32 at Fayette and Collinsville. The Birmingham Airport has been running considerably warmer than most thermometers on recent mornings… they are at 36. The urban heat island effect is expected, but it seems to be enhanced out there this weekend for some reason.

WARMER DAYS AHEAD: Look for bright sunshine today with a high in the upper 60s, followed by more sunny weather through mid-week, with afternoon temperatures reaching the mid 70s tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday will stay dry with a high in the 70s, but things change a bit over the weekend. A surface front will slip into Alabama Saturday, and bring a risk of showers. Nothing especially heavy, and thunderstorms are doubtful due to the lack of instability. But, just keep in mind a few passing showers are a possibility. And, that front will stall out somewhere over Central Alabama, and I think we need to keep at least a chance of a shower or two in the forecast for Sunday. Highs over the weekend will drop into the 60s.

NEXT WEEK: Forecast confidence is not especially high, but watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 00Z GFS brings in a nice soaking rain event for Alabama on Monday and Tuesday of next week thanks to a deep upper trough to the west, and a surface low passing to the south. Drier air will follow by mid-week.

MID-MONTH MISCHIEF: Again, check out the Weather Xtreme video and take a look at the 00Z GFS output for November 20-21… nothing like a pre-Thanksgiving snow storm for the Deep South. But, we all know this is absolute voodoo that will most likely vanish on future runs. But, it is always fun to peek. It has snowed here in November before, you know.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up this Saturday, November 13 at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. See you there!

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Tonight’s guest is Nick Walker of The Weather Channel… we will stream live at 8:30 p.m. CST if you want to listen; the show will be posted to iTunes and the web by midnight.

I will be speaking this morning at Briarwood Christian High School… look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 or so this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
