Texas Snow

Thanks to Justyn Jackson of the NWS in Amarillo for these images… he writes:

“Hi James,

Hope you’re doing well. We saw our first winter storm of the season today. The southwestern Texas Panhandle was the hardest hit area with amounts generally between 1-4″, but some places some locally higher amounts. In fact, I measured 5″ here on the NW side of Amarillo. At times, the snow flakes were extremely large (between nickel and quarter size). The breezy northwest winds compounded matters by causing blowing snow, which reduced visibilities under a mile at times.

It’s been an interesting 12-36 hours out here. We hit a high of 65 yesterday, then had strong storms last evening that produced small hail and resulted in major flooding across parts of the city. I woke up around 6:30 this morning to the sound of thunder but heard no rain. I figured the storms were off in the distance and the rain had finally stopped. Instead, when I opened the front door, there was about an inch of snow covering the ground! Very exciting experience.”
