A LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS MOVED INTO NORTHWEST ALABAMA SHORTLY
BEFORE MIDNIGHT MONDAY NIGHT AND MOVED STEADILY EASTWARD ACROSS
ALABAMA DURING THE DAY TUESDAY. WHILE THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE WAS
WORSE IN MISSISSIPPI…IT DOES APPEAR THAT SEVERAL TORNADOES MAY HAVE
TOUCHED DOWN IN CENTRAL ALABAMA.

THREE SURVEY TEAMS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN
BIRMINGHAM ARE CONDUCTING DAMAGE SURVEYS TODAY IN AREAS THAT MAY
HAVE RECEIVED TORNADO DAMAGE. AREAS STILL TO BE INVESTIGATED
INCLUDE:

TEAM ONE: ELMORE COUNTY.

TEAM TWO: NO TORNADO DAMAGE WAS FOUND IN PICKENS OR TUSCALOOSA
COUNTIES…SURVEYS COMPLETE.

TEAM THREE: BLOUNT AND WALKER COUNTIES.

AM TUESDAY.

THE TORNADO INITIALLY TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT ONE MILE WEST SOUTHWEST OF
MILLPORT WHERE A FEW TREES WERE UPROOTED. THE STORM TRAVELED
NORTHEAST AT AROUND 40 MPH…CROSSING HIGHWAY 17 ABOUT ONE HALF MILE
WEST OF MILLPORT. ON BOTH SIDES OF HIGHWAY 17 BETWEEN 50 AND 70
TREES WERE EITHER SNAPPED OR UPROOTED AND A COUPLE HOUSES SUSTAINED
SHINGLE DAMAGE. LIMBS WERE EMBEDDED INTO THE ROOF OF ONE HOME. IN
THE SAME GENERAL LOCATION…A TRACTOR TRAILER WAS OVERTURNED AND A
METAL ROOF WAS BLOWN OFF OR A GARAGE BUILDING. IN ADDITION…METAL
ROOF STRIPPING WAS BLOWN OFF OF A BARN ROOF AND TRANSPORTED 100
YARDS DOWNSTREAM INTO THE TOP OF A 60 FOOT TREE. THE STORM LIFTED
ON THE NORTH SIDE OF MILLPORT WHERE A FEW MORE TREES WERE SNAPPED
AND A BARN SUSTAINED SOME ROOF DAMAGE.

WATCHES: TORNADO WATCH #757 WAS IN EFFECT FROM 3:49 AM UNTIL 11:00
AM.

THE TORNADO INITIALLY TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF A MILE
WEST SOUTHWEST OF HIGHWAY 82 WHERE A FEW TREES WERE SNAPPED. IT
TRAVELED NORTHEAST AT AROUND 40 MPH CROSSING HIGHWAY 82 NEAR STEWART
STREET WHERE THE WORST DAMAGE OCCURRED. HERE…NUMEROUS TREES WERE
UPROOTED…SEVERAL HOMES SUSTAINED MINOR ROOF DAMAGE AND A COUPLE OF
METAL OUTBUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED. FARTHER NORTHEAST THE STORM
CROSSED US 31 NEAR PRATTVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL WHERE AN AWNING WAS
DAMAGED AND TOSSED NEARLY 50 YARDS. ROOF COVERINGS AND AWNINGS WERE
ALSO DAMAGED TO HOMES AND BUSINESSES ALONG SHELA BLVD. THE FINAL
POINT OF DAMAGE WAS LOCATED ONLY TWO TENTHS OF A MILE FROM THE
ELMORE COUNTY LINE IN THE PREMIERE PLACE SHOPPING CENTER. HERE A
PORTABLE FREE STANDING SECURITY TOWER WAS DAMAGE. IN ALL…SEVERAL
DOZEN TREES WERE EITHER SNAPPED OR UPROOTED…SEVERAL HOMES OR
BUSINESSES SUSTAINED MINOR DAMAGE AND SEVERAL METAL OUTBUILDINGS
WERE DAMAGED.
