With a cold front slowly approaching from the NW, numerous showers and thunderstorms have developed this afternoon, mainly south of I-59. Some of the storms are producing rainfall rates up to one inch per hour.

So far, rain has been limited over the BHM Metro area. This morning, an area of clouds held temperatures down a little bit, while just south of here, more sunshine warmed things up more. This destabilized the air further south, allowing more thunderstorm development. Take a look at visible satellite pictures from 9:15 am and 2:30 pm.

However, the air is unstable over north Alabama, too, with CAPE 1000-2000 J/kg. The cold front is still NW of Memphis, so we could still see a few showers and storms later this afternoon or this evening. A few are forming in NW AL.
