Freezing Rain Continues Across Central Alabama

Numerous accidents reported across Central Alabama this morning as light freezing rain and sleet continues across the area.

It is now pushing into East Alabama where temperatures are in the upper 20s to around 30F, so additional problems will develop in these areas.

Bridges as far south as Autauga and Dallas Counties are reporting icing.

Temperatures will edge down another degree from evaporational cooling in areas where precipitation is occurring, but the good news is that the problems will ease before noon as temperatures slowly rise above freezing.

Bridges and overpasses will be the biggest problem. Slow down and be alert if you will be driving. If you can delay travel for a couple of hours in areas that are below freezing and getting precip, that would be great.

Steps, sidewalks, decks and porches will also be especially vulnerable to icing. Please be careful on these types of surfaces so we don’t experience a rash of slip and fall injuries with the accompanying broken bones.

Some schools are closing early in Etowah County and other school systems have delayed starts or closed entirely.

The NWS now has most of Central Alabama under a freezing rain advisory until noon.
